What is Segment?

Segment is a Customer Data Platform (CDP), that’s acquired by Twilio. Segment helps collect and control your customer data to create a complete and coherent overview of your digital properties’ users. You can collect, send, transfer and archive first-party customer data, aka 1P data.

First-party customer data consists of:
  • Data from social media profiles
  • Behavioral data collected across your website, app or product
  • Data from subscription-based products or emails
  • Data from customer feedback and surveys

1P data is super valuable since it’s collected directly from your audience. It’s reliable data for forecasting behaviors and making predictions for your future campaigns.

So, how exactly does Segment work?

Segment creates updates about action taken on your website or app. Such updates are translated into different formats that can be used to send data to different applications, such as Mixpanel, Google Analytics, Google AdWords, Facebook Pixel.

Segment sends raw data to data storage applications , such as Amazon S3, Google Cloud Storage, Postgres, Amazon Redshift, and more.

Segment Config API lets you to programmatically manage workspaces, sources, destinations, route data, and configure a tracking plan.
